Tour de Nez - Now Six Days Long
Posted on June 14, 2008

There’s exciting building for the upcoming bike race in Lake Tahoe. Feel the burn and soak up Lake Tahoe’s eye candy during the 16th annual Northstar-at-Tahoe Tour de Nez, which begins June 17 and concludes June 22.
Organizers say the cycling festival has reinvented itself this year. The most conspicuous changes include expanding from two days last year to six days in 2008, adding a new major sponsor in the Northstar-at-Tahoe resort and venue-shifting from mostly Reno to mostly the Lake Tahoe-Truckee area.
Reno will be the site of Tuesday (registration and reception) and Wednesday (first race) events next week, but the Tour de Nez moves to Truckee and Lake Tahoe for its final four days.
“Lake Tahoe is an amazing place to road-bike in the summer,” says event spokeswoman Abbi Whitaker. “We noticed the crowds at Tahoe and in Truckee had grown exponentially, and we get a lot of support there.”
While the five-stage professional competition is among the top pro races in the United States, Tour de Nez also features amateur and enthusiast races and activities.
“Cycling geeks” will have a multitude of activities to partake in, according to race director Tim Healion.
“There’s tons of stuff for amateurs and recreational riders, and in organized mountain bike (groups).”
Amateurs and enthusiasts can compete at various ability levels, and mountain bikers at Northstar Resort’s mountain bike park. There will be kids’ races, and a Family Fun Ride has been scheduled for June 20. Story by: Dan Vierra (Sac Bee)
