Kirkwood Mountain Resort Lifts

Posted on September 3, 2008

Kirkwood Mountain Resort hiking

Kirkwood feels off the beaten track because it is. It stands alone among Tahoe-area resorts in its relatively remote location on Highway 88, just out of reach of Bay Area day-trippers. If you come to Kirkwood, you’ll probably want to spend the night - a good idea anyway, considering all the options.

The resort’s lift-assisted mountain biking and hiking program is offered only on weekends, when Chairs 1 and 2 are put into service. Trails are open other days as well, but you’ll have to get uphill under your own steam to enjoy them. Kirkwood offers a variety of clinics geared to get beginners on the trail and help intermediates and experts hone their skills.

Hikers, meanwhile, can find some of the most accessible concentrations of wildflowers in the Sierra in Kirkwoods’ alpine meadows.

So reliably spectacular is the bloom that the resort hosts an annual Wildflower Festival the first weekend in August to showcase its floral bounty. Guided hikes are part of the program, and anyone who participates is sure to gain appreciation for the specialized ways of Mother Nature.

Something’s different here - and no, it’s not Halloween in August. All those people in crash gear that makes them look like so many Darth Vaders are here to experience some of the most diverse lift-assisted mountain biking in the West.

Northstar’s mountain bike park has expanded rapidly over the past three years to increasingly attract riders from Southern California and out of state as well as enthusiasts within day-trip distance.

From jump parks and black-diamond, expert-only trails like Boondocks to smooth cruiser runs like the new Easy Rider, the park accommodates riders at all levels.

“We have over 100 miles of trail on the mountain and killer access to thousands of miles of trails in every direction for cross-country biking,” says park manager Kyle Crezee. “People are riding here from Tahoe City, Kings Beach and Truckee. The Tahoe Rim Trail is multi-use in this section, too.”

Jakes on the lake Lake Tahoe.jpg

Enjoy a very nice meal at Jake’s on the Lake which has a spacious outside patio overlooking the Tahoe Cove marina. The building is large and sprawling and the tables were not crowded together, offering lots of privacy.

The view was just endless blue Lake Tahoe waters and golden sunshine. Jake’s restaurant is often a favorite for many visitors and locals.

The service is friendly, professional and very attentive and is a relief to have enough space to breathe in some of the beautiful scenery and enjoy a quiet meal with family or friends.

Squaw Valley USA Cable Car

Squaw Valley USA cable car

Californians - and all comers to Lake Tahoe - can thank (or curse) the late Alex Cushing for crowning a mountain with as delightful a surprise as High Camp Lagoon & Spa.

The Squaw Valley ski-area founder, who died in 2006 at age 92, envisioned building a veritable resort in the sky, complete with 500-room hotel, nine-hole golf course and tennis courts.

The hotel and golf course never came to fruition. But the old High Camp lodge was expanded in 1989, and the addition of what was long known as High Camp Bath and Tennis Club brought summer business to a resort with much to offer during the green season.

Today, use the Squaw Valley USA Cable Car to reach the facilities at High Camp, elevation 8,200 feet, include an expansive pool and hot tub, changing rooms and lockers, an open-air, Olympic-size ice rink (converted this summer to roller skating), a museum devoted to the 1960 Olympic Games and two newly resurfaced tennis courts.

Meeks Bay Resort

Posted on August 18, 2008

Meeks Bay Marina Lake Tahoe

There are very few places in Tahoe that have what Meeks Bay Resort has, if any.

The beach is less that 150 yards from the campsites, there is a general store on-site, a snack bar on the beach, outstanding hiking across the street, boat rentals, and a fantastic family atmosphere.

The water here is outstanding, crystal clear with a warm sheltered area that almost guarantees it will be among the warmest in the basin.

The camping itself is also first rate, the spaces are close together, but with the great family atmosphere it just makes it easier to meet people.
