Kings Beach - Tahoe’s Banana Belt
Posted on March 19, 2008

Scenic Kings Beach can be found at the Lake Tahoe’s North Shore, at an elevation of 6,280 feet. Kings Beach was named after card shark Joe King, who won the town site from George Whittell nearly a century before poker had a cult cable-TV following. Set against a vibrant blend of colors, flavors and textures, Kings Beach is very relaxed and kick-back. In fact, it seems this stretch of North Lake Tahoe wrote the book on mellow kick-back.
It is rightfully known as the North Shore’s “banana belt”, as it stands in the sun’s path from early morning into the late p.m. As if basking under the sun’s glow were not enough, this mountain/beach town throws a sandy welcome to all visitors with a signature downtown public beach.
Hip shops, restaurants, side-street vendors – all true to their cultural heritage – and down-home Lake Tahoe lodging, plus a host of human characters give the town an indescribable savior cool. Hwy. 267 spills into Hwy. 28 here, too, presenting skiers/boarders insta-options to the North Shore’s Big 12 Lake Tahoe ski resorts.

There are actually three separate beaches along Highway 28 in Kings Beach that pretty much run together. They are (from east to west) the Coon Street Picnic Area, Kings Beach Recreation Area, and the North Tahoe Beach Center. The Coon Street Picnic Area stands out as having a boat launch (lake level dependent) and the North Tahoe Beach Center has undergone a multimillion dollar renovation and features a fantastic group facility. The largest of the three is the Kings Beach Recreation Area. Here you will find water toy rentals, a playground, volleyball, and lots of shaded picnic tables and grills. The area is also host to cultural events as well as arts and craft fairs. While there is no food service at these beaches, you are only steps away from numerous Kings Beach restaurants.
